Superstar Shootout

Template:Infobox Superstar Shootout was an online Flash game that was part of the official Mario Hoops 3-on-3 website. The game is not currently playable from any official source, as the site is defunct. Superstar Shootout was not listed in the Nintendo Arcade, the section on nintendo.com dedicated to promotional web games. This is in spite of the fact that another Flash game published on the Mario Hoops 3-on-3 website, Dribble Skillz, was.^[1]

Gameplay

The game has Mario trying to shoot a basketball into a hoop, located at a distance. To throw the ball, the player first has to aim the throw using the left and right arrow keys, then hold the space bar to set the throwing force. The ball moves on an arc path and bounces off surrounding objects, such as the floor or the basket's backboard. For each successful shot, the player is awarded 50000 points which are added to the score.

On the way, the ball may bump into arrow wheels that send it in the direction they indicate. Some of them slowly spin around, thus constantly changing direction. While some may advantange the ball, other only hinder it by bouncing it away from the basket. Coins are scattered throughout the area and can be collected with the ball, each coin adding 100 points to a score. The coins themselves are added to a separate counter. The red coin that appears among the gold ones is worth 10 gold coins and, therefore, also 1000 points.

The layout of the coins and arrow wheels changes after each throw, regardless if it is a successful or a missed shot. The player has 10 basketballs to throw, and the game is over when all of them are used up, leading to a screen which shows the total of coins and the score obtained. The player can then choose to replay the game.

Coins collected in the game could be used on the official website to unlock characters, which could then be dragged on a field and selected to read snippets about each.
