Fighter Flies are one of the myriad of pests inhabiting the sewers that Mario fought in the original Mario Bos. They hopped, so Mario's jump had to be timed precisely to knock them over. Fighter Flies seem to have made a new home on the boundary between the Mushroom and Beanbean Kingdoms in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
