Universal Pictures, also known as simply Universal and formerly Universal Studios Inc., is an American film distributor and publisher owned by NBCUniversal. The company has had two major involvements with the Super Mario franchise: In 1982, Universal Studios filed a lawsuit against Nintendo, claiming that both the character and scenario of Nintendo's game, Donkey Kong, infringed on Universal's rights to King Kong. Universal is also a co-producer and distributor of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a film released in 2023.
