A Bob-omb Car,[1] also known as a Bomb-car,[2] is an explosive vehicle resembling a Bob-omb found in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Wii. This variety of car only drives on the main streets, unlike the rest of the vehicles, which can drive on shortcuts. The Bob-omb Car bears a resemblance to the Mini Bomb Kart, which appears in Mario Kart 64.

These cars first appeared in Mario Kart: Double Dash, where they act as obstacles on Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City. Bob-omb Cars detonate when they are hit with an item or when a driver rams into them. Hitting a Bob-omb Car has the same effect as getting blown up by either a Bob-omb or a Spiny Shell. After exploding, Bob-omb Cars will respawn from certain hidden passages. On Mushroom Bridge, Bob-omb Cars appear from the pipe shortcut's entrance. In Mushroom City, the Bob-omb Car comes out of the alleyway on the left when players go down the hill and onto the left when someone hits one of the existing bombs on the lower level, and in the "Do Not Enter" alleyway on the upper level. If the player attempts to block the Bob-omb Car from coming out multiple times, the Bob-omb Car will reprogram itself to come out in an area that will evade the player, assuming they do not move their kart. The Bob-omb Car is also invincible from blowing up within the first three seconds of its respawn. Despite having a lit fuse, a Bob-omb Car never explodes on its own.

After being removed from GCN Mushroom Bridge in Mario Kart DS, Bob-omb Cars return in Mario Kart Wii on Moonview Highway as obstacles, where they are mostly unchanged, though windup keys have been added on the back of these cars to resemble actual Bob-ombs. Unlike in Mario Kart: Double Dash they will respawn in the location where they blew up, and they can now blow up within the first three seconds of their respawn. Bob-omb Cars have also appeared in the Mario Kart Wii competitions. The competitions that they appeared in included September 2008 and May 2009's first competitions.

Unused appearances

A model for the Bob-omb Car exists within the game files of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, though it is unused in-game.[3]
