In this event, the player plays a series of events, each with a separate mission to complete, one after another until they have made three fouls. Each event consists of an increasing level of difficulty as each previous level is completed, requiring more individual actions to be done in a shorter amount of time. For each successfully completed level of a mission, the player is awarded a number of points, the amount depending on the time in which the completed the mission and the level of the mission, with more points awarded for a faster completion time and higher level missions being completed. These points are added together to create the total for the event, with the totals for each event and the final score being given at the end of the event. If the player fails a round of an event, if the event comes back around the player will play it one the difficulty level they failed on, rather than the next one up. For the shooting section, the player must repeatedly tap the touch screen to shoot all of the targets which are only shown on the top screen. It does not matter where the player shoots the target, however if two targets overlap and the player shoots at the point where they intersect, the shot will only count for one target. The player fails the event if one or more of the targets isn't shot. For the equestrian missions, the player must jump over a number of fences by touching the touch screen with the correct timing, when the two blue circles overlap. If the player does not jump the required number of fences in time, the player will receive a foul for the mission. In the swimming section, the player must draw a number of loops in a given direction on the touch screen to cause their character to swim a number of metres. The number of metres corresponds to the number of loops, and the player will get a foul in the event if they are unable to successfully draw all of the loops. In the running section, the player must blow into the microphone to cause their character to catch their breath, with failure to do so or to blow enough resulting in a foul. The final event, fencing, requires the player to trace a shape only shown on the top screen on the touch screen, with the shape either being a "V", "X" or "Z". If the player fails to trace all of the shapes in time, the player will fail the event.

Modern Pentathlon is a Multi-Discipline Event that appears exclusively in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The aim of the event is to score as many points as possible by playing a series of events without losing all three lives. The starting record for this event is 5632pt(s).

In the game's story mode, Modern Pentathlon appears as the first challenge of Heroes Episode 3, A Rainbow in Fog, in which Mario must beat Fog Imposters of Luigi, Sonic and Tails. It also appears as part of the second challenge of Heroes Episode 5, The Promise to Toad, in which Sonic must beat Fog Imposters of Mario, Luigi and Tails in it, as well as in Marathon and 20km Race Walk.

Gameplay
