One thing that distinguishes them from a regular Spiny is that they have a single row of three retractable spikes on their shells. Additionally, their skin is dark green and shells are black.

Thorny[1] is an enemy in Mario Clash. They walk left and right on the stage, much like Shellcreepers. Mario can defeat them by throwing a shell at them.

IN their artwork, they resemble a dark green-skinned Spiny with a single row of three retractable spikes on their black shells. In the game, however, they look the same as the game's version of Spike Tops, just with darker colors and two extra spikes.
