After the level starts, the player can see that there is a [[bin]] which sits on the foundation of the level, right next to a [[ladder]]. The bin is not important, however, and it is not needed to complete the level; it can be picked up and thrown at the [[Bowbow]] who lumbers in a further place. The above-mentioned ladder connects the ground with a girder platform, which is, in turn, connected with another larger platform through another ladder. Mario has to climb the two platforms and avoid the [[Oil]] enemy who ascends and descends on the second platform - the enemy can be destroyed with the [[hammer]] sitting near it. The hammer seems to host a long ladder, which grants the hero new, high-placed platforms. Then, Mario has to simply head to right until he falls in a small, narrow pit, where he finds the [[key]] blocked between the pit's walls. After the hero grabs the key, he falls onto another platform, under which stays the locked door and the target of the level. Mario, with the key in his hands, must walk at the door and unlock it, after which it will be left bust open for Mario.

Stage 1-1 is the first actual stage of the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong. It marks the first area of the Big-City; on the level map, it is located on the edge of an avenue, which goes along the front of a grand building. In the stage, Mario sets off to rescue Pauline from the mean, wretched Donkey Kong. The ape shows off at the beginning of the stage, hurrying with the damsel in his sturdy arms to a shallow metallic door. He manages to enter the door with the girl, and once inside, Donkey Kong locks it. While Pauline is yelling frantically for help behind the closed door, Mario reaches the place; being in such a desperate situation, the plumber seeks for anything that could help open the door - which is, basically, his goal in the level. With not much effort, he manages to find a big key, which will aid him in the opening of the solid entrance.

Layout

The level starts with a bin which sits on the foundation of the level, right next to a ladder. A Bowbow lumbers in a further place, near the locked door of the stage. The mentioned ladder connects the ground with a girder platform, which is, in turn, connected with another larger platform through another ladder. Up next, on the second platform, ascends and descends an Oil enemy - a hammer sits near it. The hammer seems to host a long ladder, which grants the hero new, high-placed platforms. To the far right, there is a narrow pit, whose walls prevent the key of the level from falling. A girder platform stays right under the key, and underneath the platform, the door awaits for Mario.

Pauline's items

Within this stage, Pauline's items can be found in the following order and in the following places:

  • Hat: right above the second Bowbow in the level, which stays on a girder separated by the second lowest platform from the left through a small slit.
  • Umbrella: above the left highest girder.
  • Purse: stays in front of a window above the third highest platform from the right.
