Mario arrives from the right but Donkey Kong is on the other side where puts Pauline down, confident Mario can't the jump over the huge [[pit]]. Mario then goes back and starts to perform the [[Handstand Jump]]; he makes it over to the pit with his second jump but hits his head on the ceiling, causing him to hold his head in pain and allowing Donkey Kong to grab Pauline and escape. Mario then does the pose he does after a Handstand Jump before holding his head again; he then continues to chase after Donkey Kong before the cutscene ends. The player is then given lives based on their score.
