'''Individual epée''' is a [[Fencing]] [[Event]] that appears in the [[Nintendo DS]] version of ''[[Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo DS)|Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games]]''. It is set in the Fencing Hall of the {{wp|China National Convention Center|National Conference Center}}. The objective of the event is to touch the opponent a set number of times with the epée before the opponent is able to land as many touches. [[Toad]] and [[Cream (character)|Cream]] appear as referees in this event.

==Gameplay==
This event consists of the player playing two matches, a first one against a random opponent, and then either the first place match against the other winner if the player wins, and a third place match against the other losing character if they lose. The event starts by showing each character on their respective sides of the strip, before starting the match with the terms "En garde!" and "Allez!". To move, the player must either press left and right on the Control Pad to move in the respective directions, or can press the A Button to go right and the Y Button to go left. If the player taps twice quickly in the same direction, they will move faster in that direction. When the player is close enough to the opponent, they may be able to perform moves on them. The player is able to perform a straightforward touch by sliding towards the opponent on the Touch Screen, which will award them a point if they are close enough to the opponent. They are also able to perform a feint by sliding in the opposite direction, away from the opponent, however they will not be able to score any points with this move. If the player is being thrusted at by the opponent, they can perform a parry by sliding upwards on the Touch Screen, which, if done with the correct timing, will block the attack and will also cause the other character to lose their balance and become vulnerable. If the player is parried, they must quickly rub left and right on the Touch Screen to regain their balance. The first character to score the required number of points, or the character with the most points at the end of the set time will be the winner.

In this event, the player is able to adjust the time and point requirement settings, with the time able to be set at one, two, three or five minutes, or alternately an infinite length of time, as well as the number of points required to win the match, with the options being three, five, ten, fifteen or twenty points.

==Trivia==
*Interestingly, the description for this event in the instruction booklet is accompanied by a warning not to imitate the characters' actions due to a lack of protective equipment. While several of the other games in the series feature fencing as an event, they do not contain a similar warning.
