When a color capsule matches the color of the Capsule Plus or that it is eliminated, the amount of capsules is increased by the labelled amount. In normal stages, if a new capsule is added to the stage, the number decreases by one. In timed stages, the number instead signifies the amount of seconds added to the timer, and it decreases by one for every passing second. A Capsule Plus that is reduced to zero is automatically eliminated, and will fill the skill meter since the Capsule Plus is considered eliminated. The number on the Capsule Plus will only decrease if the Capsule Plus itself is visible. For example, if they are hidden inside a [[Brick Block]] or an undamaged [[barrel]], the number won't decrease. However, if it is inside a cage or a partially-damaged barrel where the number is visible, the number can be decreased. If the number is decreased to zero while it is contained, the Capsule Plus will disappear along with the containing object, including colored cages. Capsule Plus only appear in stage mode.
