The Legend of Zelda is a fantasy-themed game series created by Nintendo. The series chronicles the adventures of the Hylian hero, Link, as he sets out to defend the realm of Hyrule from the forces of evil. Link is not a singular character, but appears in different incarnations who all share the same bloodline. In many of his adventures, Princess Zelda appears as a deuteragonist, while Ganon serves as a main antagonist. All three characters are connected via a mystical force known as the Triforce, and are reincarnated across generations to do battle again and again.

As one of Nintendo's most successful series, the Zelda franchise has had generous amounts of synergy with the Mario franchise. Both franchises have had frequent crossovers and cross-references to each other, most notably in the Super Smash Bros. series; however, Link has also made various appearances in the greater Mario franchise itself, including a full playable appearance in Mario Kart 8.
