The Dark Moon is an actual moon that is seen in Luigis Mansion Dark Moon. The Dark Moon resides over Evershade Valley and the Mansions that reside in it.

The Moon gives of an effect that calms the ghosts in Evershade Valley which makes them very friendly. King Boo destroys the Dark Moon shatteing it into six pieces and being scattered over the five mansions, Gloomy Mansion, Haunted Towers, Old Clockworks, Secret Mine and what is presumed to be King Boos mansion. The sixth piece lands between E.Gadds Safe Room and Gloomy Mansion.

It is up to Luigi to recover the six pieces and make the ghosts friendly again.
