Heart Coins appeared in Yoshi's Story, and could be collected for points. Not unlike coins in the Mario series, Heart Coins are hidden everywhere in a stage, including in the sky, in high places, and even in the ground. Most of these coins, however, are very easy to acquire.
There has also been a long-lasting rumor that if the Yoshi clan manages to collect every Heart Coin in every stage, the mysterious, and extremely powerful, Purple Yoshi will be unlocked. Sadly, this fact is untrue, meaning that the collection of coins are only for point purposes.
