Watermelons are fruit that appear several times in the Mario series and differ each game. In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, there are three different types that offer special attacks. Green Watermelons allow a Yoshi to spit out the seeds as projectiles; if it already has a bite mark in it, there will only be half as many seeds. This type of watermelon appeared in Mario Party 5 as a battle weapon worth 7 battle points. Red Watermelons allow a few shots of fire breath that burn enemies and Ice Blocks. Blue Watermelons allow a few shots of ice breath that freeze enemies, making them fragile and harmless. In Yoshi Touch & Go, Watermelons, when eaten, would give Yoshi 5 eggs. In Yoshi's Story, they appear as the favorite fruit of Green Yoshis, along with Melons.

In Super Mario Sunshine the Watermelons are massive. In Gelato Beach a shack makes watermelon smoothies, and there's a festival to show off the person with the largest watermelon. The watermelons there are extremely sensitive to pressure, and act and look more like water balloons. In the secret levels there are some square watermelons that act as breakable blocks.

In Mario Hoops 3 on 3, the watermelon is one of the unlockable basketballs.

In Super Mario Galaxy, when 9999 Star Bits are collected, all the green coconuts in the game turn into watermelons. In the same game, a watermelon is involved in the mission entitles "Bubble Blastoff" of the Deep Dark Galaxy. Mario lands on a planet where the aim is to ground pound so that the three encircling tennis balls within hit the watermelon visible in the center.
