Mario Circuit 1 is the first course of the Mushroom Cup in Super Mario Kart and as such, the first course in the Mario Kart series in general. It was later reused as the first Extra Course in Mario Kart: Super Circuit and the first retro course in Mario Kart DS as the first race of the Shell Cup, being the first retro course in the series. It later reappears as a recurring course in Mario Kart Tour, first appearing in the New York Tour.

Mario Circuit 1 shares its music with Super Mario Karts other three Mario Circuits: 2, 3, and 4. The arrangement is also in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where it can be played in any Mario Kart-series stage as well as Battlefield, Big Battlefield, Small Battlefield and Final Destination as of the version 8.1.0 update.

The only hazard in this course is the Warp Pipes that appear near the second turn of the course. After the player passes the pipes, they find the only set of ? Panels in the course. There is also a shortcut a racer can take by driving through the dirt right after passing the ? Panels. The player needs either a Mushroom or a Star to successfully implement the shortcut without slowing down. However, taking the shortcut without an item does not take more time than following the course.
As with the other three Mario Circuit courses, Mario Circuit 1 consists of a simple paved road with sand on both sides that can slow down racers. Outside of the course lies a grassland with trees and hills in the background. The course begins with a left turn followed by a straightaway. Racers then encounter a left turn with several pipes, which serve as this course's only hazard. After racers pass the pipes, they reach the only set of ? Panels in the course. After taking a sharp left turn followed by a sharp right turn, there is one last left turn as racers reach the finish line.

Shortcuts
A notable shortcut can be found just after the ? Panels. After taking the subsequent left turn, the player can use a Mushroom or Star to drive through the off-road to the right of the track, cutting off the sharp right turn. However, taking the shortcut without an item does not take more time than following the course.

Mario Circuit 1 reappears in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, and is the first track of the Extra Mushroom Cup. It uses the background from Peach Circuit. The pipe hazards were removed from the track, but an item box can be found in the shortcut.

Mario Circuit 1 reappears as the first course of the Shell Cup in Mario Kart DS, as well as the first retro course in the series overall. Like every other Super Mario Kart track in Mario Kart DS, it only has three laps instead of five. It retains the same hazards as in Super Mario Kart, though it is a bit longer as well. Mario Circuit 1 makes a return in Mario Kart Tour, starting with the New York Tour. It retains its Mario Kart DS layout. The two pipes on the right after the third turn were moved onto the right side of the track. The mountains and trees in the background are now in 3D. The course now has a starting banner with the classic Mario Kart logo. This course is a favorite of Mario, Toad (Pit Crew), Light-blue Toad (Pit Crew), Mario (Hakama), Mario (Classic), Mario (Halloween), Baby Mario (Koala), Mario (Baseball), Peach (Happi), Mario (Samurai), Yoshi (Gold Egg), Nabbit, and Chargin' Chuck. It is also a favorite of Peach (Kimono) and Mario (SNES) if they reach level 3, and Luigi (Lederhosen) and Mario (Racing) if they reach level 6. As with other courses in the game, Mario Circuit 1 has a reverse version and a trick version, titled Mario Circuit 1R and Mario Circuit 1T respectively; a reverse/trick version, Mario Circuit 1R/T, was later introduced in the 2019 Holiday Tour. In the reverse and reverse and trick variant, a Glide Ramp is added near the Finish Line.
Mario Circuit 1 makes a return in Mario Kart Tour, starting with the New York Tour. It retains its Mario Kart DS layout. The course now has a starting banner with the classic Mario Kart logo.

Prior to the 2019 Paris Tour, no driver had SNES Mario Circuit 1R listed as a favorite course; instead, its appearance in the Peach Cup in the New York Tour relied on the cup bonus to raise Peach to the top tier.
Unlike most of the SNES courses, Mario Circuit 1 reuses Mario Kart 7s arrangement for SNES, instead of the original music from Super Mario Kart.

Mario Circuit 1 only appeared in two tours in 2022; the Singapore Tour, the first tour of the year, and the 2023 New Year's Tour, the last tour of the year. This means Mario Circuit 1 has the second longest gap between appearances in Mario Kart Tour out of all classic courses, only behind SNES Koopa Troopa Beach 2.
The course also appears as  Mario Circuit 1R (reversed), Mario Circuit 1T (with ramps), and Mario Circuit 1R/T (reversed with ramps); the first two were introduced alongside the normal variant in the New York Tour, while the last was introduced in the 2019 Holiday Tour. In the R variant, oil slicks and traffic cones are now present as well as a glide ramp. In the R/T variant, all of the aforementioned additions are retained, there are now pipes with air currents following both glide ramps, and the shortcut through the sand now has dash panels.
