Egg Lay is a move that Yoshi is able to perform in Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros Brawl. The player has to simply press the B Button to activate the move. Yoshi will go on to stick his tongue forward, and will eat anyone he hits. He will then lay an egg containing the player he just ate, causing him to become immobile. Yoshi can then proceed to attack the trapped player, while he can't retaliate. The player will hatch out of the egg eventually. It can also be used to run away from the opponent, in order to regroup. It is unknown if Yoshi will use his move again in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

*Egg Launch enables Yoshi to launch opponents farther than normal after turning them into eggs. However, the trapped opponents can break free from the eggs more easily. This attack can be used to send opponents off-stage, which can potentially give Yoshi KOs if his target's horizontal recovery is poor.

Egg Lay is Yoshi's standard special move in the Super Smash Bros. series. With the move based on Yoshi's ability to turn enemies into eggs in the Yoshi franchise, Yoshi sticks out his tongue to grab opponents, and if he grabs one, he swallows them and lays an egg with them trapped inside and open to attack; the amount of time they are trapped is increased the higher their damage is, though they can escape more quickly by pressing buttons.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Egg Lay has two custom variants:

 • Lick cannot grab fighters, but instead, Yoshi jumps forward and uses his tongue to attack nearby opponents.
 • Egg Launch enables Yoshi to launch opponents farther than normal after turning them into eggs. However, the trapped opponents can break free from the eggs more easily. This attack can be used to send opponents off-stage, which can potentially give Yoshi KOs if his target's horizontal recovery is poor.
