When a Launch Star is used, a Sling Star appears inside of it and they both send Mario flying.

A Launch Star is an item in Super Mario Galaxy. It looks a bit like a rotating Sherif's Star in mid-air, and when Mario walks up to it, then spins, (using the Wii Remote,) he can boost at an ultimate speed from planet-to-planet using their powers that literally throw him off a world. They are first seen in the Star World, the first (known) level in Super Mario Galaxy.

Launch Stars often let Mario fly through space before landing on another planet, unlike their smaller sister items, Sling Stars, which are also found around the game. During the flights through space, Mario can grab floating Star Bits by using the Star Cursor to grab them.

Also, once feeding a pink Luma, the Luma will create a new planet and leave behind a pink Launch Star.
