Birdos and their eggs make their first appearance in the American release of ''Super Mario Bros. 2'' (and in the Japanese-only game, ''[[Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic]]'' that it is based on). Here, Birdo's Eggs are plain white and are spat by [[Birdo]] and sometimes by the red variant. In many levels, the only way to damage Birdo is to jump on top of the egg and pick them up and throw them back at her, although sometimes alternatives to these eggs exist, such as [[Mushroom Block]]s. Thunder Birdo is driven in on another vehicle, controlled by [[Mouser]], where it proceeds to attack the fort with a gigantic, explosive egg. Afterwards, King Koopa uses normal Birdo fire until a rebel force, which includes Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad, leave the fort using a tanker full of spaghetti sauce as bait.

As seen in the ''[[Nintendo Comics System]]'' comics "[[Bedtime for Drain-Head]]" and "[[Betrayal Most Proper]]", after losing control of the [[Mushroom Kingdom]], Bowser employs Birdos as castle guards. Mario battles these guards on two occasions. Under the delusion that he is [[Dirk Drain-Head]] in "Bedtime for Drain-Head," Mario enters [[Bowser's Castle]] to save Toad. After laying waste to a large number of enemies outside of the castle, a Birdo blocks Mario's path and shoots eggs at him as he tries to enter the castle. However, Mario quickly picks them up and throws them back, defeating this Birdo similarly to the Birdo in ''[[Super Mario Bros. 2]]''.

The second encounter with Birdos occurs in "Betrayal Most Proper" as Mario and [[Toad]] attempt to rescue [[Wooster]], who are then attacked by Birdos in [[Bowser's Castle]]. When their movement becomes impaired by a conveyor belt moving in the opposite direction, the Birdos begin firing eggs. Rather than defeat the Birdos, they simply run off.

Birdo can speak to Mario through the eggshell and requests a battle with him and his [[party member|partner]]s, and their attacks eventually split the egg open. Now hatched, the Birdo can attack Mario and the others with explosive [[Eggbert]]s, rather than normal Birdo's Eggs, although Birdo holds a Birdo's Egg during battle.

This is the first game to feature a type of Birdo's Egg having spots.

Once thrown, the eggs home in on the nearest character above Birdo and her racing partner in rank. Upon collision, the kart that is hit flips, and the Birdo's Egg breaks and releases three items at random. These items can include [[Bob-omb]]s, [[Super Star|Star]]s, [[Mushroom]]s, [[Red Shell|Red]] or [[Green Shell]]s, [[Fake Item Box]]es, or [[Banana]]s. Birdo's Eggs also break if they hit stray items or environmental hazards, and if they go long enough without hitting anything they self-destruct. The eggs are also one of the only two Special Items that [[Petey Piranha]] and [[King Boo]] cannot get, the other being the [[Green Fireball]].

While pitching, Birdo throws the ball, and it bounces on one side of the ground and then bounces farther to the other side as it passes the batter. This can trick the batter, as the ball quickly bounces from one side to the other. However, this pitch can result in a ball.

If Birdo is batting, the ball is shot to the shallow outfield and bounces around the area. It works similar to [[Yoshi]]'s [[Egg Ball]], except the Weird Ball has pink spots rather than green spots, and bounces farther on the outfield.

In Challenge Mode with Yoshi, the player must obtain the [[Pink Egg]] Power-Up before being able to use this move for Birdo.

Birdo's Eggs appear on some of Birdo's team logos and marks on Yoshi's team, [[Yoshi Islanders]].
