In ''Super Mario Galaxy'', bars appear in the [[Ghostly Galaxy]], where [[Luigi]] is being imprisoned during [[Luigi and the Haunted Mansion]]. They are introduced alongside [[Boo Mushroom]]s, which transform [[Mario]] into [[Boo Mario]]. Shaking {{button|wii|wiimote}} makes Boo Mario turn intangible for five seconds, enabling him to phase through the bars and ultimately reach Luigi. Bars are otherwise impenetrable to Mario.

Luigi himself is behind bars. If Boo Mario phases through his holding cell to return outside, he loses the power-up.

During [[Racing the Spooky Speedster]], Boo Mario races the [[Spooky Speedster]] in [[Boo's Boneyard Galaxy]]. The entire raceway is on a 2D plane. The caverns are blocked by translucent, ghostly walls called crystal that function identically to bars.

In ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'', bars appear only in the Howling Tower of [[Boo Moon Galaxy]], the only part of the game to include Boo Mushrooms. Bars behave as they did in the prior game. This area is accessible only during [[Haunting the Howling Tower]]. The layout of the Howling Tower is comparable to Boo's Boneyard Galaxy.
